Regional Meeting: UNBOUND: Theory, Research and Interweaves of Survivors Protecting Abusers.

Have you ever been frustrated that your domestic violence client seemed unable to free themself from an abusive situation? Or worse, they have taken the appropriate steps to protect themself, only to return again to the abusive situation. This presentation will help.

Abstract: Stockholm Syndrome, trauma bonding, Childhood Sexual Abuse Accommodation Syndrome, pseudo-agency, and inverse attachment describe victims’/survivors’ protection of their abusers. Aligning with the abuser can last long after cessation of the abuse, even after the abuser’s death, and in hidden or subtle ways that can block processing to zero SUDS. Clinicians are caught between urgently wanting clients to be free from the internalized or actual abuser, and knowing that the information must first be identified then adaptively reprocessed before the former can be achieved. Attendees will learn research and theory on this syndrome, barriers to healing, and precise, efficient interweaves to help our clients become unbound.

Course Objectives:

Objective 1: Drawing from somatosensory, attachment, sociological, cultural, grooming, and family dynamics perspectives, participants will be able to cite three Client History (Phase 1) factors contributing to victims/survivors emotionally and behaviorally protecting their abusers.

Objective 2: Participants will accrue strategic knowledge and self-knowledge about iatrogenic impediments to healing from trauma bonding, and will be able to recognize potential iatrogenic impediments in a vignette.

Objective 3: Participants will be able to formulate three appropriate and distinct Desensitization (Phase 4) interweaves to assist clients in eliminating maladaptive attachment to abusers.
